I’ve previously mentioned about the excellent, thought-provoking video series Everything Is a Remix. This spring, I contributed to sourcing and scripting a supplement to the series, focusing on the many influences and sources that were used in creating one of my favorite movies, The Matrix

One really enjoyable aspect of this project for me was having a reason to watch (or re-watch) a lot of movies and read (or re-read) written works I might not otherwise have tuned into. Here’s a partial list:

  • Dark City
  • Total Recall
  • Johnny Mneumonic
  • The Killer
  • Fists of Legend
  • Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
  • Through the Looking Glass
  • Blade Runner
  • Ghost in the Shell
  • Doctor Who, “The Deadly Assassin”
  • Simulacra and Simulation (I confess I only dabbled in this one)
  • Lots of web pages on Matrix influences

Another very neat thing was seeing how a range of people — few of whom had met — contributed to researching and suggesting influences to cite. What a fantastic amount of stuff we know when we put our heads together.

But the very best part was seeing how Rob, Kirby, and Blake transformed these elements into a engaging, entertaining, and informative finished result. It blows me away.

If you haven’t watched the whole Everything is a Remix series, go and see now. And don’t miss the previous supplement, Everything Is a Remix: Kill Bill
