Thanks for sharing. I must have heard DS everything David Sederis has ever written, but I’ve never seen what he looks like.
I love the background on your blog. Did you take the photo? If so, where?
Hi Emilie! I was pleased to find this clip. The one big difference between his reading in this and what I’ve seen the several times he’s come to Pittsburgh is that he normally takes notes while he’s reading. He’s said that he’s noting which lines and bits get good reactions, so it’s as though the audience acts as editor for him.
I heard him read this piece but I can’t figure out which book it’s in. Maybe it will be in the new book.
I didn’t take the background photo. I found it in 2000 in the clip art gallery on Microsoft’s website. They had several similar shots. Here’s a story: When I set up my MySpace page, I used this same image as the background there.
Some weeks later, I received an email from someone I didn’t know, “Nice background. Where did you get that photo?” I wrote back the same thing I told you just now: Microsoft Gallery, 2000, other similar photos.
She wrote back something like, “Huh. I have a photo that I took a year ago that looks identical. I wonder if they could have gotten it from me.” So apparently she thought I’d stolen it from her and was using it without permission.
I pointed out that their photo had been online years before she took hers. I haven’t heard from her since.
I love David Sedaris. I met him a few years ago at a reading and he gave me a little bag of chocolates called ‘Monkey Crunchies’ from a company that uses monkeys to help handicapped people. I still have it around here somewhere. Can’t wait for the new book.
